On March 20th I attended a concert performance of opera arias and duets featuring soprano superstar Renee Fleming and renowned tenor Jonas Kauffman at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Renee Fleming, who most recently sang the National Anthem at the Super bowl for an audience of over 100 million people, was in fine form singing some of her standard repertoire including selections from Manon. Jonas Kaufman, most recently seen on the Metropolitan Opera stage in the title role Werther, sang effectively and movingly throughout the evening especially in the Flower song from Carmen. The concerts featured duets and arias from Faust, Otello, and Manon. As an encore the two opera stars sang a delightful rendition of Lippen Schweigen from the Merry Widow and Mariettalied from Die Tote Stadt. It was such a pleasure to hear two great artists in concert. Here is an an audio performance of Mariettalied.
