New York Times Counterpoint

No, that isn’t a reference to the Steve Reich piece for solo clarinet and tape; though I hear that Bill Kalinkos gave a stellar performance Saturday with Alarm Will Sound.

Gradus ad Parnassum - Fux I was actually referring to the great piece on counterpoint that Anthony Tommasini, Chief Music Critic for The New York Times, did for the Times’ multimedia blog more than 3 years ago. While certainly not a recent ‘Happening’ it is worthy of a re-post. Using examples from Bach to Schoenberg to the Beatles, Tommasini does a beautiful job of communicating this important composition technique.
