A Thing or Two About a Tune or Two – Copa Crazy

World Cup

I am very passionate about soccer (football, el fút), so naturally, I love the World Cup.

The beautiful game has captured the hearts of millions of fans, and thankfully, it’s popularity is growing in the USA. It’s the world’s equalizing sport. Anyone can play: tall or short, rich or poor, black or white. Nothing makes me happier when I travel the world, than seeing kids pick up a soccer ball and start a make shift match. No cleats, shin guards, uniforms, or goalie nets are required. All that’s needed is a ball and a dream (and maybe four rocks to mark the goal posts).

As a language teacher, I get very emotional about the World Cup. It’s a beautiful thing for players, coaches, and fans from all corners of the globe to come together to support their nation and learn to mingle and communicate with others from all walks of life.

In addition to the cultural exposure therapy one encounters during the World Cup, one of my favorite parts of watching it is listening to the national anthems of the different countries.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

South Africa

The United States of America
